His father was a hardened veteran of many battles, often absent, dedicated and loyal to his liege, perhaps more so than to his family, and his mother was a distant figure he was discouraged to even make conversation with. Sir Joseph was determined that knights were all his sons will ever be, and so, Keller was taught how to handle weapons and horses immediately after leaving the cradle. He underwent the stardard apprenticeships as a teenager, swore his knightly oaths to Rayla when he turned twenty and since then has fought and protected the land under their banner. Despite being notoriously difficult to get along with, particularly if you are a woman, his abilities granted him some grudging respect. Two years ago, he was raised to fifth-in-command of the royal guard. However, misdemeanours and testy relationships with his superiors meant that he never rose higher in the ranks. Much to his annoyance, when Lady Eve returned to Rayla, he was put in charge of the princess's guard, or as he terms it "the captain of the royal babysitters". But as much as he grumbled and complained about what he saw as a back-handed demotion to satisfy his critics, he was still determined to carry out what was required of him. Growing up with three obnoxiously loud and boisterous brothers and without much maternal influence contributed in Keller a marked like for peace, quiet and stability and a marked dislike for what he considers to be overly feminine displays of behaviour and women in general. He tolerates the use of pegasus knights as a neccessity in Korin's harsh climate, but views them as a liability once the going gets tough. Understandably, this belief has made him unpopular with many, but he's never been one to be afraid of voicing unwelcome opinions, even to Lord Edgard himself. Many wonder why, considering his many criticisms and complaints of his superiors and his attitude, that he remains in Rayla's service, but Keller is without question loyal to Rayla, and loyalty is something Rayla sorely needs. For someone who lives in an environment best described as tumultuous, Keller is a man stubbornly resistant to change. It's not that he wants Rayla's uncertain rule to continue, but rather sees the situation as the best it has been and, with Lady Eve's return home, things will only become, in his opinion, more difficult and undoubtedly worse off. He demands and expects extraordinarily high standards from his subordinates, though if he put himself through his own drills, he would almost certainly fail. When in bad temper, he tends to complain about nearly anything - the weather, his job, the situation he's found himself in. And then, he resorts to drinking like a sailor and smoking like a chimney. Which, considering recent events, means he does all these things pretty much all the time. Keller has chin length dark hair that partly obscures a sallow face that is often glowering or scowling, smiles rarely and is beginning to show his age. His voice is hoarse from years of smoking and he walks with a slight limp.
